About Australia
The largest island in the world, Australia is home to prehistoric landscapes, unique wildlife and a vibrant lifestyle. Its beauty and scale, with vast stretches of deep red desert, rolling mountain ranges, rainforests and thousands of miles of beaches, make it a unique and unforgettable destination.
Australia has a wide variety of environments and climates, from tropical regions in the north to cool and temperate areas in the south. The huge interior is mostly desert or dry grassland and has relatively few settlements. Most Australians live along the fertile eastern coast between Brisbane and Melbourne.
Visit Queensland to experience the unforgettable coral formations of the Great Barrier Reef, or enjoy Sydney's vibrant outdoor lifestyle. From Melbourne, take a road trip along the Great Ocean Road, a spectacular coastal highway stretching through Victoria towards South Australia.
Visit the Northern Territory to discover the beauty of Uluru (Ayers Rock) in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or explore Kings Canyon. The west coast offers deserted coastlines and Perth, its isolated capital. Away from the cities, explore the vineyards of South Australia's Barossa Valley, Western Australia's Margaret River and Victoria's Yarra Valley.
Across the water, Tasmania's quiet rural towns feature convict-era Georgian architecture. The island also offers beautiful national parks, including Cradle Mountain, where visitors can bushwalk through scenic gorges.
Climate
The northern third of Australia lies in the tropics and remains warm or hot throughout the year. The rest of the country lies south of the tropics and generally experiences warm summers and mild or cool winters. In winter, many parts of southern Australia occasionally experience frost. The Australian Alps and the interior of Tasmania are among the few areas where temperatures can remain below freezing for extended periods.
